In 1959 John Davis and John Stevens wished to start a one-design class of sailboat racing on Long Lake. They originally were considering either the C Scow or the M16 Scow. John Stevens purchased a M16, it turned out to be a fine boat. John Davis bought one and the start of one-design class racing began in 1962.
The Dohrs bought another boat, and by 1966 four more were added to the Lake.
In the beginning years racing was raced around rafts as buoys with no committee boat. The Club was formed in 1966 and the first formal races took place.
In 1967 our club was recieved in the Inland Lake Yachting Association (ILYA) with a designation of WL (Wisconsin Long).
The club grew to nearly 30 registered M16’s in the late 60’s & 70’s.
Although the numbers are smaller lately, we continue to have an active fleet.
The single handed MC scow was added to the fleet in the 1999 and we now have about 15 registered M16 & MC boats.
In 2002 we hosted the ILYA National Invitational M16 Regatta.
A Butterfly fleet was added in 2010. We have about 10 boats and growing.
5 Long Lake sailors sailed at the 2nd DuBay Long Lake Club Challenge in June 2012. This annual event for Butterflys took place at Long Lake in 2013 and 2014.
At the 1st annual 2012 LLYC Open. We had 26 boats racing. 8 MC, 3 M16, 10 Butterfly, 2 Laser, 1 Force 5, 1 Sunfish, 1 Mini Sunfish. Three of our races during the year (LLYC Open, LLYC Regatta and the Labor Day Series) are open to any sail boat and we use a handicap system for scoring.
On June 20-22, 2014 we hosted the National Butterfly Single Handed Championship. Sailors from Colorado, Texas, Iowa, and Illinois participated. 20 sailors in all. Our own Rob Jossart took 3rd overall.
We no longer have the Butterfly Series race but they can join us racing on our open races where any boat can race using the Portsmouth Handicap System. The Tune Up race, the LLYC Open Regatta, the LLYC Invitational Ragatta and the Labor Day Series are open for any boat.
